Wu Responds to The State of the State  print page

by: Rep. Wu, Gene

AUSTIN, TX Today Governor Abbott delivered the State of the State Address in the house, and declared school finance reform, property tax reform, and increasing funding for mental health were among the emergency priorities for the state during the 86th legislative session.

Following adjournment, Representative Wu made this statement:

"I am encouraged by the priorities laid out by Governor Abbott of school finance reform, increasing funding to our schools, and increasing school safety by doing more to address the needs of mental health in our schools, as these are top priorities that I also share.

While I commend the Governor for saying we need to find pay raises for our teachers, we need increased funding in our public education system across the board; including full-day Pre-K programs in Texas. More funding for Pre-K, as well as increasing programs such as mentorships and after-school programs are a way that we can help reach some of these at-risk children who have an unstable home life, and often turn to gangs.

While we may not always agree, I appreciate the remarks delivered at the State of the State, and look forward to working on these challenging issues to improve the lives of all Texans."

State Representative Gene Wu is serving his fourth term in the Texas House of Representatives. He represents House District 137, which includes the southwestern portions of the City of Houston.
