TROOPER ZACHARY HIGHWAY BILL MOVES TO GOVERNOR ABBOTT  print page

by: Rep. Landgraf, Brooks

State Representative Brooks Landgraf (Odessa) announced this week that his bill has passed in the Texas Legislature to name a 2-mile stretch of I-20 in Ward County in memory of a Texas state trooper who was killed in the line of duty there.

Landgraf’s House Bill 3917, names I-20, from mile marker 80 to mile marker 82 as the “Trooper Billy Jack Zachary Memorial Highway” to honor fallen Trooper Billy Jack Zachary, whose life was taken west of Monahans on New Year’s Day in 2006 when he was struck by a vehicle while he was making a routine traffic stop. Trooper Zachary is survived by a wife and daughter.

"I am proud of the service Trooper Zachary gave and I am grateful that I could lead the effort to recognize his sacrifice for the State of Texas,” Landgraf said. “Our law enforcement officers put so much on the line, and we owe them our gratitude.”

The bill is on its way to Governor Greg Abbott, who is not expected to veto the measure.

“Motorists traveling on I-20 will hopefully see this memorial and be reminded to be even more cautious when they see a law enforcement officer making a traffic stop on the highway.”
