State Representative Brooks Landgraf (Odessa) helped unveil the etching of Coby Slaughter’s name on the Volunteer Firefighter Memorial on the Texas State Capitol grounds on Wednesday.

“The simple truth is that Coby Slaughter and countless other first responders in Texas are truly exemplary in their selfless service and sacrifice,” Landgraf said.

Landgraf joined members of Coby’s family at the ceremony in Austin for the official unveiling.

“Eternally etching Coby Slaughter’s name on this memorial is a small token on behalf of a grateful state,” Landgraf said. “I hope it remains a lasting symbol of his great sacrifice and a testament to the inspirational man that Coby was.”

Slaughter served the Wink Volunteer Fire Department for nearly 20 years. He made a living working in the oilfields, operating his family-owned trucking and disposal business, and helping out on the family ranches in Wink and Pyote.

Slaughter was killed in the line of duty while he and his crew were responding to an emergency call on September 7, 2016. Slaughter is survived by his wife and six children.

Landgraf also authored a memorial resolution that was passed by the Texas House of Representatives honoring Coby’s life and his service to Winkler County.
