AUSTIN - Representative Helen Giddings released the following statement on the passing of Former First Lady, Barbara Bush:
"I am terribly saddened to hear the news of Barbara Bush's passing. Mrs. Bush was a tireless advocate for literacy and reading. In 1991, she helped pass the National Literacy Act, which taught millions of American adults how to read. I had the incredible honor of getting to know Mrs. Bush when I carried the "Read to Succeed Program", which enables Texas drivers to order a specialty license plate designed by a child, with the proceeds providing financial support to the Texas school library of the driver's choice. She was quick to help promote the program and roll up her sleeves to make a difference. She helped so many people who may never know they have her to thank. But I will always be grateful for the kindness and support she showed me and the many needy children of Texas and the United States. She will be deeply missed."
