Chairman James White Encourages TPWD to Adopt Fair Deer Season Policy  print page

by: Rep. White, James

(Austin, TX) – State Representative James White, on behalf of his constituents, has reached out to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) to ask the agency to extend the North Zone's deer season to match that of the South Zone's.

The current system allows for two additional weeks of hunting in the South Zone. There have been concerns that extending the season could lead to bucks being mistaken for does when shedding their antlers in January. Although a valid concern, this is a problem that the South Zone has not encountered at alarming rates. Harmonizing the two zones would be of benefit of all Texans and provide for equal opportunity.

"Over the past several weeks, I have consulted with hunters, sought the perspective of our game wardens charged with enforcing our statutes, and listened to department biologists. I want to thank TPWD for considering this change and synchronizing the North and South Zones’ deer hunting season. Director Smith has responded to my letter and has stated that they will consider our input when this proposal comes up before the commission on March 22nd, 2018," said. Rep. White.
