AUSTIN – Speaker Joe Straus on Wednesday appointed five members of the Texas House to the Joint Interim Committee on Higher Education Formula Funding.
Rep. Trent Ashby, who chairs the House Appropriations Subcommittee that oversees education funding, will co-chair the new committee. Speaker Straus appointed Reps. Donna Howard, Geanie Morrison, John Raney and Justin Rodriguez to serve on the committee as well. Five members of the Texas Senate will also serve on the committee.
The committee was created by a rider in the two-year state budget that was signed into law earlier this year. The committee will study higher education funding and recommend ways to reform formula funding for higher education, as well as non-formula support items.
“Outstanding colleges and universities are essential to the success of our economy and the future of our state,” Speaker Straus said. “I hope that this committee will recommend ways to fund higher education that are productive, efficient and supportive of student success. These five House members are all committed to strengthening higher education and to the prudent use of taxpayer dollars, and I want to thank them for agreeing to serve.”
