Austin- Rep. Helen Giddings released the following statement on the violent white nationalist protests in Charlottesville, Virginia:
"My heart goes out to the people of Charlottesville, Virginia, whose peaceful weekend was interrupted by a barbaric white supremacist attack. I also offer my condolences to the counter protester who lost their life after a car plowed into a crowd of peaceful protesters yesterday. Charlottesville is experiencing one of the largest groups of white nationalist rallies in a decade. We must search out the roots of this bigotry and eliminate it once and for all. Our country must rise above the systemic racism that permeates so many facets of our society. Calls for unity are not enough. We must demand a call to action. It is on each of us, from the President to every day citizens, to condemn racism when we see it. We must not waste another day doing nothing. We must not allow another tragedy to pass us by without self-reflection and action. Racism is our original sin and it is our eternal struggle. We must never grow complacent to finding its cure."
Representative Helen Giddings proudly serves the cities of House District 109: Dallas, DeSoto, Cedar Hill, Glenn Heights, Hutchins, Lancaster, Wilmer, as well as part of Duncanville.
