Flower Mound Conservative Vows to Enact Stricter State Spending Limits

(Austin, Texas) -- Today, State Representative Tan Parker filed House Bill 208 during the 85th Special Legislative Session. House Bill 208 limits the growth in state spending to no more than the growth of population and inflation. This legislation is one of the 20 items that Governor Greg Abbott proclaimed will be added to the special session agenda.

"During the recently concluded regular session, the Texas Legislature maintained its commitment to being financially responsible with taxpayer dollars by passing a conservative budget and cutting spending by $200 million," Parker stated. "In order for Texas to continue its economic dominance, we must pass a state spending cap that will ensure our fiscal discipline well into the future."

House Bill 208 would create a new formula for determining the spending cap, which currently relies heavily on wide-ranging projections of personal income, by using more accurate measures of population growth and inflation rates. It also expands the types of revenue sources that must be included when calculating the limit.

"As lawmakers, we must make certain our state government always operates at the lowest cost possible on behalf of the taxpayers who carry the load every day," concluded Parker. "I look forward to working hard on this vital legislation for Texans across the state over the month of the special session."

Now in his 6th term in the Texas Legislature, Representative Parker is focusing his efforts on promoting fiscally responsible government spending, foster care reform, transportation investments, border security, mental health advocacy, property tax reform, and providing a vibrant education system. Parker will also continue his work and advocacy for the protection of children, and has previously been highly recognized for his legislative successes related to abuse prevention, ending teenage homelessness, and public safety. Representative Parker is the current Chairman of the Investments and Financial Services Committee. He also serves on the House Committees on International Trade & Intergovernmental Affairs and Redistricting.
