by: Rep. Thierry, Shawn

The bill directs the Texas Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force to further investigate high mortality rates among African American women

Austin, Texas: On Thursday, May 4, 2017, HB 2403 by Representative Shawn Thierry was passed unanimously out of the House Committee on Public Health. The bill will require the Texas Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force to investigate why African American women are dying at three times the rate as other women during or after childbirth.

In the Committee, 28 representatives from a variety of influential organizations, including the American Heart Association, March of Dimes, Texas Pediatric Society, and Texas Medical Association supported the bill. Because of her work on HB 2403, Rep. Thierry was selected to serve on the Houston Endowment's Reducing Maternal Mortality Steering Committee with 30 other Texas experts with the shared goal of saving lives and eliminating this epidemic.

"The maternal mortality rates in Texas are the highest in the country and are on par with Mexico and Turkey. After reviewing the 2016 Biennial Report from the Task Force, I was alarmed to find that African American women are dying at an extraordinary rate. I am honored to carry this piece of legislation, and to have been selected to serve on the Steering Committee with other leaders dedicated to saving Texas mothers," said Rep. Thierry.
