Representative Raney Lays Out First Bill as Vice Chair of Higher Education, Protecting Student Veteran Benefits  print page

by: Rep. Raney, John

Austin, TX - Today, State Representative John Raney (Bryan/College Station), presented one of his top priority bills, which protects student veterans' education benefits.

HB 846 prevents institutions of higher education from imposing additional financial and administrative burdens on student veterans who use state and federal military education benefits to pay for tuition. In recent years, the processing of veteran educational benefits have been delayed, especially for veterans who are using their benefits for the first time. This issue occurred, in part, because of the federal government's budget sequestration.

In conjunction with the Texas Veterans Commission, it was discovered that student veterans from around the state have been forced to take out loans, pay additional fees and even been dropped from courses mid-semester. Representative Raney opposes placing these burdens on service members, and this bill will address the issue.

"I am honored to help these men and women who protect our country. I was recently made aware that student veterans were not being treated fairly by certain institutions," Representative Raney said. "This bill will make sure every veteran has access to their education benefits, despite any delay coming from federal bureaucracy. I'm happy to have the support of multiple advocacy groups, including the Texas A&M Student Government Association. We look forward to getting this bill passed and making sure veterans get every benefit they deserve without being hassled."

Representative Raney is serving his third term in the Texas House where he serves on the House Committee on Appropriations, the House Committee on Higher Education where he serves as Vice Chairman, and House Administration. Representative Raney is an Army veteran, having served from 1969 to 1975 as an Infantry officer. He is a sixth-generation Texan, a long-time community member of Bryan-College Station, and a small business owner for forty-eight years.
