(Austin, TX) - State Representative James White along with the members of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus announce the plans for a ceremony to unveil the Texas African American History Memorial. The memorial is currently being installed on the South grounds of the State Capitol and will be unveiled at the ceremony on November 19th at 10 a.m.

State Representative Helen Giddings, Chair of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, made the announcement along with other members of the caucus, members of the Texas African American History Memorial Foundation and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.

“We are thrilled the day has come where the stories of struggle, resolve and triumph will be honored on our capitol grounds,” said Representative Giddings. “African American history is Texas history and that will be realized with this monument,” Giddings said.

The Texas African American History Memorial Foundation has raised nearly $3 million for the monument and has received the support of Governor Greg Abbott, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, Speaker Joe Straus, and the entire membership of the Texas State Preservation Board. The Foundation also has the support of the Legislative Black Caucus of Texas.

The Foundation commissioned Ed Dwight, of Denver, Colorado, as the sculptor for the Memorial. The memorial will be the last monument erected on the South Capitol grounds under current law.

Rep. White invites all Southeast Texans who wish to attend to participate as his special guests. RSVP’s can be called in to (512) 766-5974. For more information, visit
