PLANO, TX—State Representative Matt Shaheen is pleased to begin accepting applications for the inaugural class of House District 66's Student Leadership Advisory Council (SLAC). As the success of the SLAC program spreads to districts across the state of Texas, Representative Shaheen is proud to finally offer this great opportunity for the high school students of House District 66.

The goal of the SLAC program is to provide students first-hand access to the legislative process and gain a better understanding of the importance of civic engagement. Students selected to serve on the SLAC will be required to attend quarterly meetings throughout the 2016–2017 school year, including an all-access trip to the State Capitol building to witness the fast-paced Texas Legislature in session.

Led by Representative Shaheen, the meetings will educate students on a variety of topics including the significance of community involvement, the role and functions of state government, and the overall legislative process.

To be eligible, students must be enrolled in grades 9–12 in public, private, or homeschool and must reside in District 66. Applications are due no later than September 15, 2016. The first SLAC meeting is scheduled to be held October 1, 2016.
