State Representative James White and TxDOT Work to Rebuild Southeast Texas Roads in Newton County  print page

by: Rep. White, James

(Austin, TX) - State Representative James White is working with staff at the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to expedite the rebuilding of two bridges in Newton county. Previously, State Rep. White voiced his concerns regarding the time to acquire the bids and permits. “I believe that TxDOT is listening to our concerns,” said Rep. White. Based on the latest update, the Texas Transportation Commission has approved these two bridge projects for an emergency contracting process. This will allow TxDOT to expedite the planning, bidding and building process. TxDOT plans to open emergency bids near the end of July for the bridge on State Highway 63 and in early August on FM 2626. TxDOT estimates that construction will begin between August and September.

After the flooding event, Rep. White had an opportunity to physically observe and assess the damage of these two bridges. “Along with our district TxDOT engineer, I walked under these bridges and firsthand saw how the power of the flood waters completely washed out and exposed the base of these bridges,” said Rep. White. He continues, “This is why I'm glad and supportive of TxDOT’s decision to completely rebuild our bridges, not just do a rush patch up job. We're talking about the safety of our citizens and providing quality for all of our taxpayers.”

"I want to thank TxDOT and their staff for taking prompt action to expedite these projects. Southeast Texans need these roads to travel to work. First responders rely on these roads to respond to emergency situations. Our military veterans depend on these highways to make their medical appointments,” said Rep. White.
