by: Rep. White, James

(Austin, TX) - State Representative James White has contacted the Texas Department of Transportation, Congressman Brian Babin, Senator Ted Cruz, Senator John Cornyn, and Governor Greg Abbott to inform them that it is unacceptable for permits to begin reconstruction of Southeast Texas roads in Newton county to take 9-12 months or more.

Currently, there are bridges spanning SH 63 and FM 2626 in Newton county that are not accessible due to safety concerns. These roads and bridges are the only means that Southeast Texans have to travel within the area. Without them it is impossible to promote local economic prosperity and public safety. First responders use these bridges to travel to locations in rural Texas where their aid is needed, without them, there are no alternate routes to reach citizens in need.

"This is the United States of America. We are a nation of builders and doers, or at least one time we were. We built the Hoover Dam in five years in the middle of the Great Depression. We built the Panama Canal over a decade. We beat the deadline set by President John F. Kennedy on putting a man on the moon. Waiting 12 months for just the permits for two bridges in Southeast Texas is unacceptable and not consistent with the spirit of Texas and America," said Rep. White.
