AUSTIN-- Representative Cecil Bell, Jr. (Magnolia) congratulates Calvary Baptist School Texas student and Conroe local Justin Watson as the deserving nominee for the Texas Armed Forces Scholarship Program (TASSP) in House District 3. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage students to join the Texas Army National Guard, the Texas Air Force National Guard, or to become a commissioned officer in any branch of the armed services of the United States. Every year, the governor and lieutenant governor have the opportunity to each nominate two students and members of the legislature may each nominate one.

Mr. Watson, a senior at Calvary Baptist, will be attending Texas A&M University-Galveston in the fall where he plans on majoring in Ocean Engineering and participating in the Navy ROTC program. Mr. Watson will graduate in May with an additional 24 hours of dual-enrollment courses from Lone Star College.

"The TASSP provides support to students seeking to serve our nation. It is vital to recognize these hardworking and dedicated young adults and reward those succeeding in a competitive ROTC environment. Mr. Watson is a fitting example," Rep. Bell stated.

Who can apply? Students must meet two of the follow four academic criteria: student must have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher, have achieved a college readiness score on the SAT or ACT, be ranked in the top 1/3 of their high school class, and must be on track to graduate or graduated high school with the Distinguished Achievement Program (DAP) or the International Baccalaureate Program (IB). Scholarship recipients must enroll in a Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and agree to complete four years of training, graduate in a timely manner of no more than six years, and after graduation enter into a four-year commitment with any branch of the armed services.

While the criteria and upkeep is rigorous, it is necessary as it is reserved for responsible and ambitious students. Currently in the U.S. only 56 percent of four-year students earn their degree within six years.

Mr. Watson's story is just one example of how we see the TASSP changing lives. For more information on the scholarship program, please visit:
