LA FERIA, TX-- Last Friday, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Commission announced it would be awarding $10.4 Million in Local Park Grants to Texas Communities. The City of La Feria and the Tres Lagos Public Improvement District in the City of McAllen, both located in State Representative Oscar Longoria's House District 35, will be awarded a combined $1 million through this grant.

The City of La Feria was awarded a non-urban outdoor grant for $500,000 to develop Veterans Memorial Park. Proposed developments include picnic tables, a playground with sun shade, bleachers and scoreboards for existing baseball fields, aquatic playground equipment, lighted tennis courts, a small amphitheater and a jogging trail.

"Our community parks are the heart of our towns and cities," said Representative Longoria. "Parks are a place for our families to gather, our children to enjoy little league and other sports activities, but most importantly, they provide a safe place for us all to enjoy a healthy-outdoor lifestyle."

The Tres Lagos Public Improvement District, in McAllen, was also awarded a non-urban outdoor grant for $500,000 to develop a city park. Proposed developments include lighted trails with exercise equipment, baseball and soccer fields, playgrounds, a pavilion with picnic tables and a group grill, an amphitheater, lighted basketball and tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, lake improvements and a fishing dock and kayak launch.

"As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I am committed to improving our communities and am glad we were able to secure $90 million in appropriations for the Texas Parks & Wildlife Commission during session, which will enhance community parks throughout Texas," remarked Longoria. "It is vital that we continue to fund these programs, which benefit the entire community."

Funding for this grant comes from a portion of the state's sporting goods sales tax and additional monies comes from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund.
