Earlier this year, Governor Greg Abbott signed HB 2398. While it decriminalizes truancy for Texas public school students, this legislation maintains criminal offense for the adult contributing to the truant behavior. HB 2398 codifies existing campus-based attendance intervention measures, provides for the expungement of truancy records, extends the discretion for a local judicial trust fund, and establishes civil judicial process for juveniles that continue willful violation of compulsory school attendance statutes.
To facilitate implementation, David Slayton, the Administrative Director for the Office of Court Administration and Executive Director of the Texas Judicial Council, will provide two workshops in East Texas. He will conduct both workshops from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.:
December 15, 2015
Angelina College Community Services Conference Room
3500 South First Street, Lufkin, Texas
December 16, 2015
Region 5 Education Service Center's Large Ballroom
350 Pine Street, Beaumont, Texas
In order to maximize our time, we will provide lunch at the presentation sites. So therefore, as soon as possible RSVP your attendance to Mrs. Shawn Dunn at 409.283.3700 (office) or Shawn.Dunn@House.State.Tx.Us. I am very grateful for your service in ensuring that our Texas school children receive the gift of education opportunity. God bless.
