Austin, Texas – On Friday, Governor Abbott signed Senate Bills 1304 and 1305 into law. These bills, written by Senator José Menéndez and sponsored by Representative Ina Minjarez, are

Senate Bill 1304 requires the Department of State Health Services to develop a women veterans mental health initiative as part of the mental health intervention program for veterans.

Senate Bill 1305 requires the Department of State Health Services to develop a rural veterans mental health initiative.

“After serving our country, no veteran should have to face difficulty transitioning back into civilian life. Women veterans and rural veterans are two underserved groups within the veteran community. As a proud citizen of Military City, U.S.A., I applaud Governor Abbott for signing these much-needed bills into law,” Representative Minjarez said. “While we haven’t addressed all of the needs of Texas’ veterans and military service members, this is a step in the right direction.”

Representative Minjarez was the last member to join the 84th Legislative Session, taking the oath of office on April 30, 2015. She was able to sponsor eight senate bills and co-author 48 house bills in her short time at the Capitol. She also amended several other bills to help advance her legislative agenda, which focused on public education, transportation, seniors, veterans and business opportunities.
