AUSTIN, TX -- Representative DeWayne Burns is pleased to announce three substantial pro-life bills passed by the Texas House this week.

First, the House approved HB 3994, a bill co-authored by Representative Burns. This pro-life bill strengthens parents' rights by reforming the judicial bypass process in Texas law for abortions on minor girls. Under the judicial bypass process, judges can issue an order allowing physicians to perform secret abortions on minor girls, 17 years of age and younger, without notifying or obtaining parental consent. This bill is scheduled be heard by the Senate Health & Human Services Committee on Monday, May 18.

The House also gave final approval to HB 3074 to give patients at the end of life the right to food and water if requested by the patient or the patient's family. HB 3074 was supported by a large coalition of pro-life and disability rights organizations. Representative Burns was also a co-author of this bill.

Finally, the House approved HB 3374, requiring physicians to provide state-provided educational materials to parents of an unborn child newly diagnosed with Down syndrome. The bill was amended to ensure the state materials do not advocate for abortion.

"Protecting life is a priority of mine, and I'm glad to see my fellow House members have stepped up to the plate on these pro-life measures," said Representative Burns. " These bills will further acknowledge the sanctity of life, whether you're at the beginning or end of life."
