Measure Incentivizes Truckers Use SH-130
Austin - Rep. Celia Israel (District 50 - Austin) passed a measure out of the House Transportation Committee to give trucks a discount on the SH 130 toll way and ease traffic by incentivizing truckers to reroute away from IH 35.
This effort has been given the endorsement of public safety organizations, environmental groups, the Austin City Council, and the Travis County Commissioners Court.
“They say we’re adding 110 people a day to the region, and those people aren't bringing their own highways,” Rep. Celia Israel said. "I appreciate that the House Transportation Committee moved HB 594 along so we can bring critical relief to Austin drivers.
According to TxDOT, 23% of all IH 35 traffic consists of large trucks. Truck drivers will not take tolled alternatives such as SH 130 without an incentive, and previous discounts have proven to be an effective means of motivating truck drivers to bypass traffic.
Rep. Israel is excited to see this legislation begin moving through the Legislature, and calls upon concerned Central Texans to keep up the pressure.
"HB 594 is an important step forward to improve safety and congestion on IH 35. I am optimistic that if the Central Texas community continues to stand up for this important, common-sense measure, we can send this bill to the Governor's desk."
