Rep. Ed Thompson Applauds TxDOT Contract Approval of SH 288 Construction  print page

by: Rep. Thompson, Ed

AUSTIN – Representative Ed Thompson, joined by Brazoria County and Pearland elected officials and residents, attended the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Commission meeting regarding construction along Texas State Highway 288. Texas Transportation Commissioners approved a contract between TxDOT and Blueridge Transportation Group to construct four toll lanes from south of US 59 in Harris County at the north end to County Road 58 in Brazoria County on the south end, along with eight direct connectors between SH 288 and Beltway 8.

One major accomplishment of the agreement was the inclusion of dedicated access from Pearland to the Houston Medical Center. A significant number of Medical Center employees are Pearland residents who daily make the commute via State Highway 288 to their place of work.

"We worked very closely with TxDOT on this project, especially on the direct connectors," said Thompson. “This is going to help our communities and will allow folks the ability to travel back and forth with ease.”

During earlier planning stages, the direct connectors were taken out of the project, and this would have gravely impacted travel to and from Pearland. With the help of Speaker of the House Joe Straus, however, the direct connectors were added back in to the proposed construction.

Brazoria County Judge Matt Sebesta remarked, “It is rewarding to know that the project will proceed with the eight direct connectors to Beltway 8. Just ten months ago, the direct connectors were taken out of the project.” Sebesta continued, “I tip my hat to Representative Thompson for working with Brazoria County and TxDOT in getting them added back into the project.”

"Brazoria County is growing, my district is growing, the medical center is growing, and we have got to keep up with this,” asserted Thompson at the meeting. “I have said it all along: roads are our best economic development tool."

Elected officials in attendance at the meeting included Pearland Mayor Tom Reid, Brazoria County Commissioners Stacy Adams and Ryan Cade, Brazoria County Judge Matt Sebesta, and Pearland City Council members Gary Moore, Greg Hill, and Keith Ordeneaux. The project will cost an estimated $800 million, and construction could start as soon as late 2015.
