Representative Jim Murphy appointed Chairman of the Corrections Committee, rejoins Ways and Means Committee  print page

On Wednesday, Speaker of the House Joe Straus (San Antonio) announced committee assignments for the Texas House of Representatives. Appointments for State Representative Jim Murphy include Chairman of the House Committee on Corrections, and as a member of the House Ways and Means Committee.

The seven-member Corrections Committee has jurisdiction over all matters pertaining to the incarceration and rehabilitation of offenders, maintenance of programs that provide alternatives to incarceration; and jurisdiction over the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the Special Prosecution Unit, and the Board of Pardons and Paroles.

The House Committee on Ways and Means is comprised of 11 members, and has jurisdiction over all bills and resolutions proposing taxes and revenue, the Office of Multistate Tax Compact Commissioner for Texas, and the Comptroller of Public Accounts.

"I am honored to be named a House committee chairman. I am excited about the appointment and look forward working on Corrections, one of the major functions of our state government," said Murphy. He added, "Returning to Ways and Means denotes important work on big issues for the 84th, many of which my office is already focused on."

Murphy is the former Chairman of the Manufacturing Subcommittee of Economic & Small Business Development Committee and also served on the Higher Education Committee in the 83rd session. Former committees also include Ways and Means (82R,) Chairman of the Partnership Advisory Commission (82R, 83R,) Rules and Resolutions (81R,) Transportation (81R,) and Urban Affairs (81R.)
