AUSTIN, Texas – Today, members of the Texas House Committee on Environmental Regulation have been tasked with reviewing rules recently proposed by the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to determine the impact of these rules on the State of Texas.

Representative Ed Thompson, who serves on the House Committee on Environmental Regulation, said that he is looking forward to determining the potential effects these rules may have on electric reliability and affordability for people across the state.

The Obama administration recently released rules that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions nationwide by 30 percent by the year 2030. As a result of these new levels, Texas as a state must reduce emissions by 39 percent.

“The Texas economy may suffer a major blow if these mandates negatively affect the availability and cost of our electricity.” Thompson said. “I want to better understand the issue, and am eager to present recommendations to the 84th Legislature for what we need to do.”

Texas standards for energy efficiency and renewable energy will also be addressed in the committee in order to determine if these relatively new initiatives could help reduce emissions.
“Texas is experiencing an unprecedented growth rate, and I am deeply concerned about the potential impact of the EPA rules on both our power supply and our economy as a whole,” Thompson said. “We depend on reliable energy supply to accomplish a lot of good. My hope is that, through our committee work, we can ensure what is best for Texas prevails.”

Representative Ed Thompson serves the 29th District in the Texas House of Representatives representing Pearland, Manvel, Alvin, Brookside Village, Iowa Colony, Hillcrest, Rosharon, and Liverpool. Thompson serves on the House Committees on Special Purpose Districts and Environmental Regulation. A graduate of the University of Houston with a BBA in Finance, Ed and his wife Freddie live in Pearland where Ed is an insurance agent.
