AUSTIN, Texas – State Representative Ed Thompson joined with Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples in congratulating the Franzen Ranch for 100+ years of continuous agricultural production. The ranch was founded by George Henry Franzen in 1900, and is located three miles southeast of Liverpool. Franzen was born in Illinois in 1870 and moved to Texas as an adult, buying land in Brazoria County. In 1900, the Franzen Ranch produced cattle, chickens, hay, horses, pigs, and rice.

One hundred and fifteen farms and ranches were honored during Thursday’s ceremony in the House Chamber of the Texas State Capitol. Eleven of these ranches have been in continuous agricultural production for 150 years or more. The Franzen Ranch was Brazoria County’s sole recipient of the 2013 Family Land Heritage Award, and has been in existence for the past 113 years.

“Texas has strong agricultural roots, and it is humbling to see these folks honored for the years of hard work and sacrifices their families have made,” Rep. Thompson said. “I’m honored to be here and I applaud the work of Brazoria County’s Franzen Ranch in reaching this significant achievement.”

Franzen’s great-great-grandchildren, Leyton and Averee Follmar, accepted the award for their family. Leyton and Averee live on the ranch and raise cattle with their parents, Shelli and Joel Follmar.

Collectively, the Texas Department of Agriculture honored over 4,800 properties across Texas. Cowboy poet Red Steagall performed at the ceremony, and longtime Texas journalist Ron Oliveira served as master of ceremonies.
