AUSTIN -- Texas House Speaker Joe Straus re-appointed Pete Geren and appointed Dr. Cynthia Mulrow on Monday to the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) Oversight Committee.

The Oversight Committee serves as the governing body of CPRIT, which awards grants to expedite innovation in cancer research, to help bring lifesaving cancer products to Texans and to expand cancer prevention capabilities across the state.

Earlier this year, the Texas Legislature approved major reform legislation that will make CPRIT more transparent, help prevent conflicts of interest and ensure that grants are awarded based on scientific merit.

“Pete Geren and Dr. Cynthia Mulrow are proven, accomplished leaders,” Speaker Straus said. “I am grateful that they have agreed to serve as CPRIT begins a new chapter, and I am confident that they will help restore public confidence in this important agency.”

Speaker Straus appoints three of the nine members of the CPRIT Oversight Committee. He will name his third appointee soon.

Geren, of Fort Worth, is the President of the Sid W. Richardson Foundation, which provides grants to educational, health, human service and cultural nonprofit organizations in Texas. He is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives who served as Secretary of the Army under President George W. Bush.

Geren’s term will expire in January 2019.

“CPRIT offers a significant opportunity for the people of Texas to advance the fight against cancer,” Geren said. “I look forward to working with other members of the Oversight Committee to ensure that the agency is effective in advancing its life-saving mission, transparent and accountable to taxpayers.”

Mulrow, of San Antonio, is Senior Deputy Editor of Annals of Internal Medicine and a member of the prestigious Institute of Medicine. She is a former Director of the San Antonio VA Cochrane Center. She is also a former Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio, where she is now an Honorary Professor.

Her term will expire in January 2015.

“I'm delighted to have the opportunity to serve on the CPRIT Oversight Committee and look forward to starting work on this very important endeavor immediately,” Mulrow said.

The full CPRIT Oversight Committee is expected to meet in the coming weeks.
