AUSTIN — Wyatt Sustaita, a 2013 Alvin High School graduate, has been selected by Representative Ed Thompson to receive a Texas Armed Services Scholarship for the 2013-2014 college academic year. This scholarship awards up to $10,000 for the first year of college and may be received for three more years, depending on available funding.

"Wyatt exceeded the scholarship qualifications by graduating in the top 4% of his class and earning a high score on the SAT," Representative Thompson said. "His leadership is to be commended, along with the many hours he has served our community by volunteering through his church, the Alvin High School Band, Boy Scouts, and AP Ambassadors."

While in high school, Sustaita took Pre-AP and AP courses, played football, competed in UIL number sense, was a member of the Interact Club and the National Honor Society. He was drum major of the Alvin High School Marching Band his senior year. Sustaita attained the rank of Eagle Scout and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.

"It was a privilege to nominate Wyatt, and I'm grateful for the many contributions he has made to our community."

Wyatt will attend Texas A&M University in College Station this fall and will pursue a B.S. in Biomedical Science. He plans to serve as a neurosurgeon in the Army to assist with traumatic brain injuries. Wyatt is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Sustaita, Jr. of Alvin.

To receive the Texas Armed Services Scholarship, a student must be appointed by a State Representative, State Senator, the Governor or Lieutenant Governor. The student must commit to the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) for four years and graduate in no more than five years. The student must also enter Guard service or accept a commission with the armed services within six months of graduation from college. The scholarship is administered through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and the eligibility requirements for this scholarship may be found by visiting
