AUSTIN—On the heels of the reversal of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) denial of assistance to the City of West, Senator Brian Birdwell and Representative Kyle Kacal were pleased to announce the immediate allocation of $3.2 million in state financial aid to the city. Appropriated in HB 1025 at the collective urging of Birdwell and Kacal, this direct payment represents the first portion of the funds intended for much needed infrastructure repairs for the City of West and the West Independent School District.

“I am extremely pleased to see the rubber meeting the road for the citizens whom Kyle and I serve in West,” said Senator Birdwell. “While the request for support from FEMA has certainly been appropriate, this $3.2 million payment is representative of Texans helping Texans.”

"One of the core responsibilities of our government is to deliver assistance to its citizens in the wake of a disaster," stated Representative Kacal. "The people of West have been extremely patient throughout this process, and I'm pleased that they will finally begin seeing the necessary funding assistance they need in order to rebuild their community."

Birdwell and Kacal also indicated their sincere appreciation of Governor Perry and his senior staff for working alongside their respective offices and for keeping in consistent contact with West Mayor Tommy Muska and other local officials. The two look forward to working to ensure West receives its remaining appropriations which will help the city and school district in their ongoing community revitalization efforts.

On April 17, 2013, a massive fertilizer-plant explosion damaged much of the City of West, killing 15 citizens and injuring nearly 200 others.

Senator Brian Birdwell (Granbury) and Representative Kyle Kacal (College Station) represent the City of West in Senate District 22 and House District 12, respectively.
