Representative Tony Dale’s Statement Regarding House Joint Resolution 2  print page

by: Rep. Dale, Tony

Austin- Today the House of Representatives voted on third reading to approve House Joint Resolution 2 (HJR 2). The purpose of this legislation was to establish a secure funding stream for transportation infrastructure needs.
This measure would be a constitutional amendment for Texans to vote on in November to allow for certain revenue from motor fuel taxes to be used solely for constructing, maintaining, and acquiring rights-of-way for certain public roadways.

Representative Tony Dale (Cedar Park) voted against the proposed resolution, citing support for the Senate proposal, SJR 1, which is similar but establishes a minimum amount the economic stabilization or “rainy day” fund must contain before a diversion can occur.

Representative Dale stated, “Transportation funding is vital and in the first special session I voted in favor of a plan identical to the current Senate bill. The Senate plan establishes a minimum amount that must be maintained in the rainy day fund before releasing money for any purpose. I favor aspects of the House plan as it relates to funding roads and I am hopeful the Senate and House conferees will add in a minimum level of protection to prevent depletion of the rainy day fund.”

Dale was elected to the Texas House in November 2012. He is a small business owner and veteran of the U.S. Army who previously served on the Cedar Park City Council. He represents western Williamson County, including the communities of Cedar Park, Leander and Brushy Creek, as well as parts of north Austin.
