Today the Texas Legislative Black Caucus (TLBC) honored Meria Carstarphen, superintendent of the Austin Independent School District, as an Outstanding Texan during the Community Awards breakfast. The Community Awards Breakfast is held as part of the TLBC Summit that occurs each legislative session where a select number of superior Texans from across the state are celebrated for their significant contributions to the state. The theme of this year's award breakfast was "The building of my community starts with me."
Carstarphen joins an elite list of doctors, principals and other teaching professionals as one of 21 recipients of the Outstanding Texan Award. State Rep. Dawnna Dukes (Austin) nominated Carstarphen for this award due to her proven ability as an exceptional leader in the Austin community." Carstarphen has gone above and beyond her responsibilities as superintendent by giving back to our community in ways that have improved the lives of all citizens but especially students and families who are less fortunate," said Dukes.
"Thank you Representative Dawnna Dukes and the Texas Legislative Black Caucus for the Outstanding Texan Award this morning," Carstarphen said. "I am honored to represent AISD and Texas."
