Austin – State Representative Paul Workman has joined the House Manufacturing Caucus, a legislative caucus of the Texas House of Representatives. The caucus is set to focus on the issues facing manufacturers in the state.

"As a member of the House Committee on Business & Industry and the House Committee on Economic & Small Business Development, I am particularly interested in the role manufacturing plays in Texas' economic success," said Rep. Workman.

"Manufactured goods account for 93 percent of all Texas exports and Texas has held the distinction as the number one exporting state in the U.S. for seven consecutive years. We want to keep Texas thriving and producing quality products made in our state," said House Manufacturing Caucus Chair Jim Murphy.

Texas manufacturers contributed $192 billion to the Texas economy in 2011 and one-third of all corporate taxes collected by state and local governments. “Broad-based, low-rate taxes, reliable, affordable energy, a focus on infrastructure, a ready workforce, efficient permitting and smart incentives that attract investment and fuel research and development are all part of the equation to keep manufacturing strong and to keep Texas on top,” said Tony Bennett, President of the Texas Association of Manufacturers. “If the Legislature is successful in maintaining the competitive edge that makes Texas a great place to do business, the state will continue to prosper.”

The House Manufacturing Caucus will provide educational opportunities and information on policy issues important to the manufacturing sector. In addition, the House Manufacturing Caucus will also work with other caucuses to identify, research, and build coalitions to help resolve social and infrastructure issues to ensure that Texas remains competitive and attracting new business to the state.
"Our caucus will help to educate its members on the impact of proposed legislation on manufacturing," Chairman Murphy said. "This state's manufacturing industry is driving our state economy through innovative technologies and significant economic investment and we want to see that continue."

"I am looking forward to working with the Manufacturing Caucus to make sure that Texas continues to lead in this area," concluded Rep. Workman.
