Texas must strengthen families, support children, build communities, create jobs, and promote social mobility

AUSTIN, TX -- In response to President Obama's State of the Union address, Representative Jessica Farrar applauds his leadership on the issues of immigration, education, and public health. President Obama reminded the American people of "the basic bargain that built this country - the idea that if you work hard and meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead, no matter where you come from, what you look like, or who you love." In doing so, he set before Americans the task to restore "the true engine of America's economic growth - a rising, thriving middle class" and to make sure that "this government works on behalf of the many."

President Obama proclaimed that the time for comprehensive immigration reform is now; it will strengthen families and grow the economy. Echoing him, Rep. Farrar explains, "Immigration policy affects real people. The current policy splits families apart through no fault of their own. In its wake, youth are harmed most of all, losing loved ones and the only life they’ve ever known." Rep. Farrar elaborates, "Resolving immigration preserves families. Moreover, it gives the opportunity to promote social mobility, lifting up hardworking families to contribute to society, making sacrifices towards the hallmark of the American experience: the middle class."

President Obama spoke of the need for universal preschool, vocational education, college readiness, and higher education funding. These are pressing issues for Texas, as well. Rep. Farrar states, "These worthy policy goals deserve attention and conversation. Texas has seen the effects of drastically underfunding public education. To create a competitive workforce, Texas must invest in education, the lifeblood of the state's human capital."

Rep. Farrar noted that, "Pres. Obama called upon Congress to put the nation's interests before ideology. So too must the Texas Legislature put the State's interests before partisan politics. and need to come together to support common-sense measures, such as accepting federal Medicaid expansion." She continues explaining, "By accepting Medicaid expansion, Texas will receive $100 billion for healthcare. This is a reasonable compromise the Texas Legislature needs to make."

Tonight, over forty members of Congress wore orange bands declaring, "Fix, Not Fight." Similarly, Rep. Farrar looks forward to forging reasonable compromise on behalf of Texas. She calls upon her colleagues in the Texas House of Representatives to take seriously the issues outlined by the President this evening, while putting the interests of Texans first. She is hopeful that this is the beginning of a state-wide conversation that will conclude with bipartisan and sustainable solutions that benefit families and children in Texas, above all else.
