DALLAS, TX - State Representative Eric Johnson (Dallas) will be hosting a special town hall meeting to discuss the future of access to higher education in Texas. Joining Representative Johnson will be Dr. Raymund Paredes, Commissioner of Higher Education for the State of Texas. Among the topics to be discussed will be the cuts in taxpayer-funded financial aid to college students and efforts to improve college graduation rates. The town hall meeting will take place at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center at 1201 East 8th Street, Room 237. The meeting will be held on September 29, 2011, and will begin at 6:30 pm.

"The 82nd Legislature made some ill-advised cuts to our college financial aid system that may prevent many Texas families from realizing their dream of sending a child to college," said Representative Johnson. "I invited Commissioner Paredes to join me at a town hall in District 100 so that we can have a serious discussion about the future of access to higher education in Texas, and what steps the State of Texas is taking to make higher education more affordable and attainable for students from working class families.”

Representative Johnson serves on both the House Committee on Higher Education and the House Committee on Appropriations, as well as the newly created Joint Oversight Committee on Higher Education Governance, Excellence, and Transparency.

In addition to his duties as Commissioner of Higher Education, Dr. Paredes also works with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to set the goals, policies, and procedures that govern all institutions of higher learning in Texas.
