stin--The House County Affairs Committee today voted out Representative Coleman's HB 1700, which would allow certain rural hospitals to hire physicians directly. Identical legislation by Senator Duncan - SB 894 - was approved by the Senate State Affairs Committee earlier this week.

"This is good public policy that will increase access to a doctor for thousands of Texans in rural communities," said Representative Coleman. "Doctors will have the choice between hanging up their own shingle or working directly for a hospital."

Texas is one of the few states that prohibits the employment of doctors by non-physician entities. This policy adversely affects rural communities, thus resulting in a shortage of physicians in many parts of the state.

Added Representative Coleman, "This policy will help rural hospitals bring quality physicians into the community. It increases access to hospital based primary care and specialists for much of rural Texas, and saves physicians the cost of opening a practice."

Last session, Representative Coleman and Senator Duncan passed similar legislation which was unfortunately vetoed by Governor Perry.

"I've spoken to the Governor's office, and the indication is that they are going to be supportive."

Representative Coleman is available for comment.
