STATE REPRESENTATIVE ERIC JOHNSON VOTES FOR USING RAINY DAY FUND AND AGAINST FURTHER BUDGET CUTS  print page

AUSTIN, TX - State Representative Eric Johnson (D-Dallas), a member of the House Committee on Appropriations, voted in favor of HB 275 and against HB 4 in today's Appropriations Committee meeting. HB 275 authorizes the use of $3.1 billion of the Rainy Day Fund to cover a portion of the $4.3 billion shortfall the state faces in the current fiscal year.

The remainder of the current year's shortfall is covered by a $300 million increase in sales tax collections projected by the Texas Comptroller and $800 million in cuts to state services and institutions in fiscal year 2011 as authorized by HB 4, which Representative Johnson opposed.

"I voted against HB 4 because it makes harmful and unnecessary cuts in 2011 that could have been mitigated through more extensive use of the Rainy Day Fund," said Representative Johnson. "For example, HB 4 cuts $9 million from the Dallas County Community College District in the current fiscal year. I want to be sure that the people of Texas are fully aware that HB 275 does not solve all of our problems. There will still be more than $6 billion in the Rainy Day Fund that can and should be used to prevent the devastating cuts that are being proposed in HB1 in spite of the Governor's stance that the remainder of the Rainy Day Fund is off limits."
