Texas PTA names him to Legislative Honor Roll

HOUSTON, TEXAS - Today, State Rep. Dwayne Bohac (Houston) was named to the Texas PTA’s statewide Legislative Honor Roll for his leadership in public education during the 81st Session. HISD School Board President Greg Meyers, SBISD School Board Member Mike Fallick and Texas PTA Treasurer Lisa Holbrook presented Bohac with an award and commended his long record of promoting policies that help Texas teachers and students, including House Bill 1801 which adds school supplies to the list of tax free items during Texas’ annual “Sales Tax Holiday.”

"Texas PTA applauds Representative Bohac’s House Bill 1801 which eliminates the sales tax on school supplies during Texas' Annual Sales Tax Holiday," said Sharon Goldblatt, Texas PTA President. "This legislation helps Texas families during these tough economic times and prepares children to succeed."

The Texas PTA created the Texas Legislative Honor Roll to recognize elected or appointed officials at the state level who support the Texas PTA legislative agenda. Individuals recognized for the Texas PTA Honor Roll must demonstrate the initiative to enhance the quality of life for children and youth, improve the equality of education, strengthen families, improve child safety standards, and support Texas PTA priorities.

"Rep. Bohac has been one of the most reliable and steadfast supporters of public education in the legislature," said Meyers, HISD School Board President. "He made a commitment to make our schools better, and that is exactly what he has done."

In addition to the recognition by Texas PTA, Representative Bohac has also been praised by numerous groups across the state including: the West Houston Chamber of Commerce, the Texas House Republican Caucus, Spring Branch ISD, Houston ISD, Collaborative for Children and the Children's Assessment Center.

"Our economy is quickly becoming knowledge-based as opposed to labor based. As a result, the legislature must look for innovative solutions that move public education forward," said Bohac. "The global market place is becoming more competitive than ever and our students need the tools to compete and be successful."

He was also given a certificate of appreciation by his alma mater, Scarborough High School for his support of their students and their new charter school venture--the Advanced Virtual Academy.

Mike Fallick, current Spring Branch ISD Board Member and former School Board President said of Bohac, "Since his initial election to the State House, Representative Bohac has been a tireless supporter of Spring Branch ISD. He has worked hard to increase funding for our schools, including his strong support of the bill that provided pay increases for our staff in the last legislative session. Representative Bohac has also closely worked with the District to obtain support and passage of our initiatives to eliminate Robin Hood and to provide additional funding for high quality pre-K."

Texas PTA is the largest grassroots organization in Texas with 600,000 members--parents, teachers and others who have a special interest in children, youth, families and schools.
