Rep. Dukes - Celebrate Mardi Gras at the 10th Annual African American Community Heritage Festival  print page

(Austin, Texas) Austinites are invited to join State Representative Dawnna Dukes (D-Austin), ProArts Collective, AMERIGROUP Community Care and Huston-Tillotson University for the Tenth Annual African American Community Heritage Festival on Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the grounds of historic of Huston-Tillotson campus, located at 900 Chicon Street in East Austin.

The 2009 African American Community Heritage Festival is a free event with activities suitable for all ages. This festival is the pinnacle of Austin’s celebrations of Black History Month and the rich culture African Americans contribute to the Austin community every day.

“The festival is a great opportunity to showcase the talent and accomplishments of the African-American community in Austin,” Texas State Representative Dawnna Dukes, said. “This festival has brought the community together for nine years. This year we have great food, great music and great fun. Our 10th anniversary festival will be the best one yet.”

Executive Director of ProArts Collective, Lisa Byrd, says, "State Representative Dawnna Dukes and I both recognize that the best way to engage and energize our community is in the process of living our history."

The African American Community Heritage Festival celebrates the coming together of individuals to strengthen the community with a focus on family fun and community information. This will be a day for fun, food, and family, complete with live entertainment, interactive and educational activities for children, and a variety of artistic performances. Children's activities will center on AMERIGROUP's Kids Zone, including face painting, the Kiddie Express Train, free bicycle helmets, safety demonstrations, and much more. AMERIGROUP Austin COO Cathy Rossberg, said, "We are thrilled to be a part of this wonderful community event and look forward to sponsoring the Kids Zone for a fourth year." Festival attendees can enjoy step shows from Huston-Tillotson's fraternities and sororities, slam poetry, and Austin’s youth group Shining Starz, local crafts and artisan work, Health Fair including health insurance information and food services.

This 10th African American Community Heritage Festival also serves the East Austin community by raising funds for local non-profit organizations including the Huston-Tillotson University Scholarship Program.
