Governor Signs Bill by Rep. Murphy to Monitor Auto Theft  print page

by: Rep. Murphy, Jim

Austin, Texas-- Representative Jim Murphy (Houston) joined Governor Rick Perry at the bill signing ceremony for House Bill 3225 which relates to the scope of the Automobile Theft Prevention Authority (ATPA). House Bill 3225 changes the word "automobile" to "motor vehicle" in statute. “The Automobile Theft Prevention Authority plays a vital role in coordinating with state law enforcement to reduce the number of vehicle thefts in Texas,” Governor Rick Perry said. “I applaud Rep. Murphy for his leadership on passing HB 3225, which will conform state theft standards to federal standards by now including motor vehicles, and self-propelled construction and farm equipment under the Authority’s purview. This change will help protect more Texans from becoming victims of theft." This change in code will allow ATPA to expand their anti-theft program to include all self-propelled vehicles and will bring Texas in line with Federal tracking standards.

“This bill fights crime by coordinating our State and Federal efforts. Its passage helps law enforcement personnel better track and apprehend these thieves who prey on hard working Texans," said Representative Murphy.

Members from Texas Department of Transportation, Texas Department of Public Safety, and as well as representatives from Texas insurance companies were also in attendance to show support of the ATPA program. This legislation will take effect September 1, 2007.

Representative Murphy represents House District 133, which includes part of West Harris County. He serves as Vice Chair of Urban Affairs and is a member of House Transportation and Rules and Resolutions committees.
