AUSTIN – Texas House Speaker Joe Straus (San Antonio) announced Tuesday that he has appointed Pete Geren of Fort Worth to the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas Oversight Committee.

Geren is the President of the Sid W. Richardson Foundation, which provides grants to educational, health, human service and cultural nonprofit organizations in Texas. From 2001 to 2009, he served in the U.S. Department of Defense as Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense, Acting Secretary of the Air Force, Under Secretary of the Army and Secretary of the Army.

He also served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and was formerly assistant to U.S. Sen. Lloyd Bentsen.

“Pete Geren has proven himself to be a strong leader in the public and private sectors, and CPRIT will benefit from his vast experience and expertise,” Straus said. “I expect him to play a key role in helping CPRIT leaders restore public trust so that the agency can again focus on the critical work of combatting cancer.”

The Oversight Committee serves as the governing body of CPRIT, which works to encourage innovative cancer research, expand research capabilities and develop the Texas Cancer Plan.

"CPRIT offers a significant opportunity for the people of Texas to advance the fight against cancer," Geren said. "I look forward to working with other members of the Oversight Committee to ensure that the agency is effective, transparent and accountable to taxpayers."

The Speaker appoints three of the 11 members who serve on the CPRIT Oversight Committee. Geren succeeds Barbara Canales of San Antonio, whose term expired. Geren's term will expire in January 2019.
